Why should you pay more?

djdelagh

In my line of work, I often come across people who ask, ‘’why are you charging so much’’, ‘’I know others who are willing to do this at cheaper rates’’.

Some DJs charge higher rates because they are well trained, experienced professionals that do it for a living and commit most of their time to make sure the events they perform at, are as close to perfect as they can be. They do not let other jobs get in the way of them making sure everything is perfect. They also typically spend between 20-40 hours of time making sure your 4-6 hour event is perfect. This kind of preparation shows through their accessibility to help you with questions, coordination, and suggestions to help drive the success of your event.

Yes, there are some of the poor quality DJ’s charging more but you won’t find too many great ones charging less though. I'm sure at this point you will be wondering what makes a great DJ and why should you be ready to pay more for something you can get for cheap. First off, cheap is very expensive and unless music/entertainment is not a priority at the event you are planning to have, you are allowed to go along with what your money can get. Every great DJ is particular about sound quality and always wants to provide the best for your event; the kind of equipment (PA/Speakers) you will need to service a party in a 50 seater hotel conference room will most certainly be different from what you will need in a high-walled 800 seater ballroom regardless the guest size hence the variation in pricing. Equipment is very key in delivery and that is why most great DJs come ‘’bearing’’ equipment of very high standards and precision worth ten thousands of dollars (In case you are wondering, the price of a single speaker for large events is hovering around $2000). Great DJs are driven by passion, they put everything they have into their sets because the music lights them on fire. Seeing the crowd respond to their mixes is what fuels them and that is obvious from the very first song they drop to the last; they absolutely keep the dance floor busy until the soles of your feet can’t take it any longer. He/She arrives on time to set up and do soundcheck hours before the start of your event; practically a DJ must arrive at least 3 hours before the start of the event to sync his setup with that of the decorator/planner, then performs for another 4-8hrs(well, that’s because most Ghanaian events don’t start on time) then spends at least another hour and half tearing down his/her setup, that is close to 12 or more hours in total. So next time you are planning that event where the microphones don’t go off when it matters the most or your ears don’t get punished with very bad sound, call a professional who pays attention to details and be ready to pay more.
